This is a big "Spartan Hooray' to the Beck Reunion Committee and all who participated making it a wonderful lifetime memory! It was fabulous opportunity to connect with past classmates and friends and to share all our high school memories. The music was terrific both Friday and Saturday evenings. Brant Wilson 52-56 didn’t graduate, died August 2919, Wife Linda Toronto (older brother) sang in the glee club, sang the lead in Mikado.

I have many fond memories of the singing auditorium, the professional school shows, the talented football and basketball players, an amazing teaching staff including Will Rice and Mr. Milburn for history, Mr. Stewart for Geography, Mr. Simpson for Science and "Crossroads Africa." I met Mr. Milburn several years later at the Faculty of Education at Western while working on my Masters of Education. Somehow he recognized me and spoke to me after the seminar. He was also the teacher who encouraged me to attend Beck for Grade 13.

Surprisingly, I had to write my English exam the following year as I failed my English departmental exam. This failure was very disappointing for me as I passed Grade 13 Latin and French. If you remember the Grade 13 Departmental exams, if you had a run on sentence in an essay you would automatically fail English. You would also be docked points for spelling errors. At the time I was a poor speller. When I wrote my thesis for my masters of Education I was proud of myself as I did not have one spelling mistake in my 128 page thesis entitled, "Implications of Computer Integration Across the Curriculum With learning-Disabled Students." I was proud to know that my thesis would be accepted at OISE in Toronto.

I took the 2 year London Teachers College course and became an educator. During my 50 year career in teaching I taught all grades, became a vice-principal in Middlesex County and an occasional teacher after retirement for several years.
Now in retirement I have had the opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering at a thrift shop and local Legion. I have had the honour to be the Provincial President of the Retired Women Teachers which allowed me to visit 42 Branches across Ontario last year. This year, I am Second Vice-President of the Retired Teachers of Ontario, District 10, Bruce Grey, secretary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 202, Lion's Head, Ontario and chair of the Northern Bruce Peninsula Community Support Committee. During the time that I have been secretary of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 202, Lion's Head, I wrote another book entitled. "A Historical Review of the Lion's Head Legion Branch 202 Minute Books from 1931 - 2016 - Celebrating 85 years for the Branch and 65 years for the Ladies Auxiliary." I had the interest to read the minute books from 1931 to 2016 to write this historical review. Will Rice Mr, Milburn, Mr. Simpson and Mr. Stewart instilled in me, the love of history and learning as I believe "one does not know where they are going until they from where they came."

After raising a family in Exeter, my husband and I have retired to the Northern Bruce Peninsula. It is a location as my grandson once said, "Grandma, you can hear the silence."

The last time I attended the "Beck Singing Auditorium" a former classmate said to me, I do not know much about you as you were not listed in the Graduation 1961-62. Now I have told my story which began with these memories that I cherish as a former student of Sir Adam Beck Collegiate. Thank you for the opportunity to tell my story.

Bevan McNeil, class of 1960. In putting together some memories for his grandchildren, I came across this site. On here I found his class picture from graduation, which will be included in the book I'm putting together. I'm sad to say that Bevan passed away on December 30th, 2019, following a long medical battle on many different fronts.

I hope I can make it this year [to the Singing Auditorium] - it's on my calendar so we'll see how that works out.

The last time I was in London was for Ray Masterson's funeral but I do plan to attend the 2020 Reunion and Singing Auditorium. Not many of us left from the 50's, (men),.. . so I was pleased to see Doug Petch is still involved. I have many fond memories of playing football for Beck and I will bring some memorabilia from the time we won the WOSSA championship. Its not a long drive from Mississauga but I never seem to get to London. My wife will be in Italy on April 25 which will give me as much time as I need to meet up with old classmates and team mates of that weekend. See you soon.

I am very excited to inform you that I have actually published my first book. The title of the book is: Speak To Me: Travels and Exploits of a Language Lover.

It is a memoir with an unlikely twist. It's a story about an intrepid woman's adventures traveling and pursuing her passion for languages, visiting and living in many countries solely because of the language spoken there. Why would she want to study one language after another? Her answer is that, inexplicably, she has been compelled to learn every language she reads or hears. She learned Italian driving from Paris to Rome, listening intently to the native speakers as French changed into Italian. Now she's looking for an instructor of Nahuatl, a fascinating language, especially in the context of Mexican Spanish. Is that crazy or not? Crazy about languages, at least. Speak to Me: Travels and Exploits of a Language Lover details a trip through life seen from a linguistic viewpoint. Enjoy an unforgettable journey, with its many dangers and much excitement along the way.

Last night (Apr 6, 2019) we had great gathering of the Spartans at Tony's. Over 2 dozen us reminisced, smiled and laughed. Physics teacher Floyd James was there to add to the story telling. Such a special night. And we have them 2x a years. Watch the Facebook group for announcements!

Just thinking about my upcoming luncheon with some old Beck friends. A dozen or so of us get together once or twice a year to keep up our friendships, and tell stories of our days at Beck. Forgot to advise that two of Beck's finest have passed away in the last couple of years. John Orr and Merv Burgard. Two great friends of long standing. We miss them!

I loved the Singing Auditorium. I spent a lot of time in the library. I was very shy.

Always enjoy the reunions with wonderful friend from Beck and reliving the singing auditorium experience. Wonderful memories. Regretfully I can't make it this year (2018) as I will be in Manitoba. I have retired from a wonderful career in teaching elementary k to Grade 8 in Middlesex County and then Thames Valley District School Board. I have the honour to represent the Retired Women Teachers of Ontario as the Provincial President for 2018 - 2019. I look forward to attending the reunion in April. I have many fond memories of the "Singing Auditorium" at Beck. My fondest memories are of the wonderful teachers at Beck Collegiate who have since passed but are not forgotten.

First time coming across this page. Only spent two years at Beck, 1976-77 and 1977-78. Two teachers influenced my life forever. Mr. William Tucker, English Teacher extraordinaire, and my Phys Ed teacher and Football coach, Andy Stothart, an amazing man. To have the opportunity to attend a Singing Auditorium some 40 years later is amazing. I will be there!

Hello Spartans- Interesting that so many people are on the site of a school that really wasn't very big and has been closed for good many years. Tells you something about what we had going there I guess. A great mix of caring teachers (Fred Langford) and involved students, sports and music. Wonderful years too soon over. For many years I have wanted to get in touch with Carol Austin, who taught French and German while I was at Beck and to whom I owe quite a lot. She has always been shown as a "missing person" in the lists kept here and I have never been able to find a trace of her. I was a student at Beck in 1963. I hope if you can contact Mrs V Rittenberg and just let her know how much her kindness has meant to me. I had to quit school when I was only 16 I am 66 now. She cried with me and helped me to appreciate her kindness to me. I have gone back to school and a few times in spite of my situation. I now work in a Hospital in Kitchener Ontario. Her kindness and warmth have stayed with me all my life. Words cannot express how I feel for her. She has never left me. Please let her know that I am glad I had gone to that school. Kevin Hopper here. My oldest brother Chris, my only sister Ellen, and my younger brother Colin all attended Beck. I was only there for ONE YEAR, 1965 I think, after which I attended the Fine and Commercial Art Program at H.B. Beal, graduating in 1969. Would dearly love to find sisters Nancy and Liz Brown, (or anyone else who might remember me!) who both went to Beck the year I was there, as well as Lynne Steinman, and a guy named Jeff who moved to Michigan. (There are others, but hey, that was almost 50 years ago! I am planning to retire in a few years, and it is very likely that I will return to London at that time. I stumble across this site from time to time and never spend less than an hour lost in memories. I attended Beck from 1967-72, as did my father a generation before, and backward glances into his past are as enthralling as glances into my own. After graduation and a decade with Theatre London, I returned to university, became a lawyer and now work for the federal Justice Department (which has, alas, no singing, auditorial or otherwise), with intermittent postings abroad, my spouse being a diplomat. Hi, Spartans, I wish I could be there on Friday. As an enthusiastic but terrible singer (my brother Doug got ALL the talent), I was always thrilled to be carried along in the harmonies of a Singing Auditorium, Beck in the mid-60s was a wonderful place, and the musical and theatrical stars shone brightly. Sing in memory of one of our brightest stars, Bridget Blackwell. And sing a few for me, the tuneless one, Barbara (Varty) Collishaw, Ottawa.

I am 77 years young but Toronto is such an impersonal ZOO of strangers that some days I feel like I'm much older. Every day I read the London Free Press online ( esp the obits) LOL. Missed last singing auditorium and, unfortunately, will miss the one May 6 as I'm having my second hip replacement May 5 in preparation for a revision of the other one in February. Hi Everyone: Just visiting my Dad at the Nursing Home in Parkhill and did a "google" on my maiden name. Could not believe it when the Beck website came up. Spent over an hour reading the messages,remembering the "Beck Spirit" and seeing names I hadn't thought about in many years...Sad to hear about Bridget Blackwell and Miss Graber but happy to hear that the Beck spirit is alive and still singing. Please let me know the next time there is a singing auditorium...always enjoyed them and would love to bring my husband to hear and see what he missed by living in Toronto. Graduated in 64. In case you missed it: one of the stars of the class of 64.... Bridget Harrison November 11, 1946 - April 21, 2010 Bridget Harrison, nee Belinda Bridget Blackwell, passed suddenly at age 63 on Wednesday, April 21st, 2010, at her home in Mississauga. Bridget is the beloved mother of Caleb Aaron Harrison, and “Nanna” to Mason and Mecaela Harrison. Bill Harrison, the enduring love of her life with whom she travelled widely, shared numerous adventures, and brought light to world, predeceased her by one year. Born on November 11th, 1946, in London, Ontario to Grace and Doug Blackwell, Bridget was an accomplished actress, singer, and performer by the time she was a young woman. Her appearances were extensive and included the Stratford Festival and the CFPL show “Act Fast.” A worldly and politically active young adult, she traveled to Liberia with Crossroads International in the 1960s. Bridget graduated from Brescia College at Western University and began teaching - which she loved passionately - and which led to her far-reaching educational career. Mainly dedicated to the Peel District School Board, her work also included the Toronto District School Board, the Ontario Ministry of Education, and OISE. As a lifelong learner and inspiring leader, Bridget touched countless educators in Canada and abroad. She was a remarkable role model for all young women, and a true champion for teen mothers. Bridget will be profoundly missed by family, friends, and colleagues around the world, especially her brother Doug and sisters-in-law Jane, Sharon and Liz; her nieces Kate, Anna, Stefani, Samantha, Nina, Jennifer, Jamie, Karina, Sonja, Jesse, Corinda and Niki; and her nephews Marc, Tobi, Andre, Bobby, Ivan, Tony, Greg, Aaron and Steven. She was also “Nanna” to Lillie, Elia, Lauren, Jackson, Jordan, Jayden I, Declan, Gabriel, Jayden M, and several other adoring children. Love you … all the world. I stumbled onto the reunion site and noticed my name on the “missing Spartans” list. I’m still waking up on the right side of the grass and still working and enjoying it despite being well past retirement age. I live in Oakville with my wife of over 35 years-have raised four kids and have five grand children. It brought tears to my eyes to see the photos of Wil Rice, Mr. Dunlop, and so many others who helped me get through High School. It was fun to see so many familiar names. The photo of the ’60 football team also brought back some great memories. Well hello Beck folks. My years were 1948 to 1953. What fantastic memories of those wonderful years. Several classmates I have stayed in touch with over the years are: Roy and Lois Merkley, Ron and Pat Hair, Bill and Marilyn Hill. Two Summers ago we stayed at the Merkleys at "The Bend". Roy, Ron and Bill got a few old friends together for a few pops. The group included Roy and Lois Merkley, Ron and Pat Hair, Bill and Marilyn Hill, George Shaw and wife, Bruce Scandrett and wife, Warren and Eleanor Skuse. Bill Munger and wife and Barbara and me. It was truly a lot of fun and laughs especially when someone brought out a very special and unusual apron for use with grilling. The girls enjoyed it more than the guys. Last Summer we rented a place at "The Bend" and another party was planned. When we got there, a great get together was set up by these rascals. A number of my old basketball and football buddies showed up with their wives. Bruce Scandrett and wife, Doug Murray and wife, Wayne Fullagher and wife, the Hills, the Hairs, the Merkeleys, the Shaws. By luck after trying for several years to get in touch with my great teammate Ross Buckle, I scored an ace. I got him on the phone in Mississauga the week before our event and said "BUCK?" he said "GAZ?" and it was like no time had passed since the '50's. 60 years years goes by fast when you are having fun. He came to the event and it was a great caper. The topping on the cake was Ron Hair arranged for our great basketball coach to show up the one and only Roger Macaulay. Being a pack rat, I saved many pictures of our gang and other memorabilia. It was a day that everyone will remember with very beautiful memories. Again a truly great time was had by all. We missed my old cohort in crime and other misdemeanors, Warren and Eleanor Skuse, so Barbara and I went to London to see them. We will try to get back again this coming year. Hey there, just visited the site for the first time. I graduated Beck in its last year, 1982 and I am not aware of any formal reunion of the final graduating year, will be 28 years in June 2010. Passed away peacefully at St. Michael's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, August 22, 2008 at age 83 years. Beloved husband of Clarice Giffen. Predeceased by his first wife Pamela (nee Roland-Jones). Loving father of Susan Morris (Rev. John Young) of Waterloo. Loving Taid of Colleen Irvine (Matt McLean) of Toronto and Meghan Irvine (Andrew MacDonald) of Huntsville. Stepfather of Adrienne Giffen (Bob Murray) of Vancouver, Frank Giffen (Dana Smart) of London, England and Matthew Giffen (Erin Giffen) of Oakville. Marsh served in the Canadian Armed Forces. He graduated from University of Toronto, Victoria College and was a stand out player with the Varsity Blues football team. Marsh began his teaching career at Sir Adam Beck Collegiate, London, ON. He returned to Toronto and taught with the North York Board of Education. He completed his career as Principal of Emery Collegiate and Georges Vanier Secondary before retiring as Director of Cooperative Education and Summer School with the North York Board. He was also active with the Standardized Patient Medical Education Program (University of Toronto) and Islington United Church. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W., Etobicoke (between Islington and Kipling Aves.) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday. Funeral service will be held at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Rd., Etobicoke on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. Another Beck grad [1960] that has been successful with another accomplishment on life's path. Dr. EMILIE [NOVAK] NEWELL will be at the Beijing Paralympics starting on Sept 6, attending as an official for track and field. I asked her for further info and this is what she wrote: This is what happens in sports for athletes with a disability. In order to make competition fair, athletes have to compete against other athletes with similar physical disabilities. For example, it would not be fair for a single below knee amputee to race against someone who is quadraplegic with impairments in both arms and legs. Because the body is used in a different way in each sport, there is a different sport classification system for each sport. Assignment of a class to an athlete is like handicapping a golfer or horse, to put it bluntly. In disabled sport, the athlete has to undergo a physical examination according to an international system, and be assigned a class. When medals are awarded, they are awarded for each class e.g. T54 class or F53 class where T stands for track and F stands for field. Athletes cannot compete without an assigned class and so going through classification is a necessary evil. My medical training and practice incorporate the skills necessary to do classification. My wheelchair sports involvement is on a volunteer basis and I have been involved since 1979, and worked my way up into the international levels of classification in three sports actually-wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and athletics. I was the Canadian Paralympic doctor in 1984, 1988 and 1992 but you can't do both doctoring and classification, and I chose to move up in the classification area which is recognized as a special technical type of official. You will not see me at track side in Beijing as we work behind the scenes. CBC televsion will be carrying news of some of the events. Canadian athletes do very well at the international level especially with wheelchair racing, wheelchair basketball both men and women, and wheelchair rugby, and goalball. These athletes will be medalling with very high probability of gold.

DON CLINE will be inducted into the Ontario Basketball Hall of Fame at a gala dinner in September as an official. Cline first played at Sir Adam Beck Secondary School in London from 1960-66, and then with Carleton University in Ottawa. Don played for the Carleton Ravens basketball team and was a member of their 67-68 OSLIAA Championship team which went on to play at the CIS National Championships. Cline became a full-time official in 1972 and continued until his retirement in 2002. He was chosen to officiate several important games including three Olympic qualifying tournaments, two Olympic games, two Men's World Championships, and many other high profile international matches. Cline's work was also valued at home as he officiated 18 CIS Gold Medal finals and many OFSAA provincial tournaments. He also served on many governing boards such as the National Board of Evaluators, with the Canadian Association of Basketball officials and was a World FIBA technical commissioner. He recently retired from active officiating in the OUA West. Don lives in London, where he worked for the PUC as a community recreation director for many years

I took my picture of the 1951 junior football London City Champions and it was of considerable interest to Marsh's daughter Susan and her two daughters. It was good to bid farewell to our coach. Ian Richmond (class of '62) retired last year after 36 years as a professor and university administrator. Ian taught French language and literature at The Royal Military College, The University of Western Ontario, where he was chairman of the French Department from 1984 to 1994, and at the French-language Université Sainte-Anne, where he was Vice President Academic and Research from 1994 to 2000. Ian and his wife, Velma, now live in Powell River, where Ian is still actively playing and teaching the bagpipes as well as being a free-lance translator and a long-distance cyclist.

Congratulations to Jo Sorrill, a.k.a. Joanne Ball, on her latest CD "From My Heart To Yours". This is a beautiful collection of piano music that makes you want to curl up with a good book or host an elegant dinner party ~ wonderful background music for either. And there are a few selections that will put you right back at Beck where Jo played piano for our Friday morning singing auditoriums in the 50's. She sure hasn't lost her touch! WRIGHT, Donald (Don) John Alexander B.A., D.M., L.M., Member of Order of Canada. Don passed away peacefully at his home in Toronto after a brief illness on June 27th, 2006 in his 98th year. His beloved wife Lillian, his life partner and best friend, predeceased him on January 12, 1993. Sadly missed and fondly remembered by his sister Dr. Mary Jean Wright of London, Ontario, son Timothy and his wife Sharon (nee Empringham) of Sarnia, daughter Priscilla of Toronto, son Patrick (predeceased in 1993), grandsons and granddaughters Christopher and his wife Katrin (nee Zeuner) of Toronto, Brian and his wife Susan (nee Prince) of Australia, Pamela Whittaker of Delaware Ont., Liam and his wife Louise of Toronto, Alyssa of Cannington and Dr. Tarah and her husband Daniel of Halifax, great-grandsons Connor, Kyle, Corwin, Benjamin and Aidan, and great-granddaughters Cassidy and Lilly. Don really lived a charmed life. He was born in Strathroy, Ontario to Ernest and Jean (nee Clark) Wright in 1908. He had three brothers and a sister Dr. Mary Wright. The family was very involved in theatre and music and the boys formed the Wright Brothers Orchestra which had a great following during their school years and on through university. Don met his Lilly Belle (Lillian (nee Meighen)), the daughter of the Right Honourable Arthur Meighen and his wife Isabel (nee Cox) at one of the dances and the rest was history. They courted each other for their entire lives together. At the University of Western Ontario, Don started the U.W.O. marching band an institution that continues to this day. He was a very successful athlete as a sprinter, high hurdler and his long jump record of twenty-three feet, eight inches held for over a quarter century. Don taught music, history, Latin and Greek for several years at Sir Adam Beck Collegiate in London and all of his classes were over-subscribed. His pedagogical talents were prodigious and his former pupils still rave about his classes more than 60 years after he taught them. Don became supervisor of music for the London Board of Education and from there he was recruited to take over the reins of CFPL Radio. He completely remodeled the studios and control rooms and simultaneously brought new and exciting programming to life. He increased the audience levels many times over. His CFPL Goes Calling brought many talented people (both musical and other forms of radio entertainment) onto the airwaves. Such voices as Max Ferguson (Rawhide), Ward Cornell, John Tretheway and Murray Brown were all brought into CFPL by Don. His outstanding creation while there was his Don Wright Chorus which entranced audiences throughout both Canada and the U.S. all through the early 1950's. Don moved to Toronto in 1955 and continued his advertising jingle business in addition to being Musical Director for the Denny Vaughn Show, Wayne and Schuster and the Cliff McKey show Holiday Ranch. He developed a new radio choir called the Don Wright Singers which performed for several years. As his career matured he composed a series of provincial anthems presented in a performance package called Proudly we Praise, a tribute to Canada, which could be performed by professionals or amateurs, and Don was very proud to be asked to arrange and conduct a performance of this work on Parliament Hill on Canada's Centennial for Queen Elizabeth II. Don's philanthropy in later years was generous and impressive. He donated to track and field endeavours and musical programmes at many universities across Canada. He received several Honourary Doctorates from Canadian Universities for these efforts, and the faculties of music at U.W.O. and Victoria University bear his name. Grace Hospital in Toronto as well as St. Michael's Hospital's maternity centres bear his and Lillian's names. A celebration of his life will be held in ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL, 65 Church Street, (at King Street East) Toronto on Thursday, July 6th at 11 o'clock. A reception will follow. Private entombment in the family niche at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Please direct any donations to the charity of your choice.

Peacefully at Parkwood Hospital, London, on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, Wilda Marguerite Graber of London. Born April 3, 1916 in Berlin [Kitchener] ON. Her teaching career began in Kitchener and Galt followed by 29 years at Sir Adam Beck Secondary School, London with retirement in 1974. Predeceased by her brother Clifford of Toronto in 1971. Survived by her brother Robert and his wife Margie of Paris, ON as well as her sister-in-law Ruth Graber of Toronto and several nieces and nephews. Following cremation, a family service will be held in Kitchener. A memorial service is to take place in September at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London. The service was taped. Twenty good quality tapes have been sold and more can be ordered for $5.00. Unfortunately, the dubbing machine (which needs to be replaced) produced some defective recordings (characerized by a popping sound on side B). These tapes should be returned and reissued, if you own one of these.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone in London who has a high speed dubbing machine that could be used to copy the tapes. This would ensure that replacements would happen more quickly.

I attended Beck for grade nine and part of grade ten in 1968-69. In spite of my short tenure, I remember my time at Beck more fondly than my remaining years of high school. I have particularly fond memories of my English teacher, Miss Lewis, who further entrenched my love of reading and the English Language. Her animated readings of parts of Macbeth brought the bard alive for me.

To this day, when I hear the Beatles "Here comes the Sun" or "Come Together", I am sitting in the Beck auditorium at lunch, listening to the music with friends and feeling cool (or was it "groovy"?). The excitement of a fall football game is another fond memory, as well as trying out for cheerleaders and the resultant pain and quaking in my thighs (which made going down stairs extremely challenging)from practicing the splits. Many of these adventures were shared with my friend Jane Fraser, whom I have lost track of. Does anyone know of her whereabouts?

I am currently teaching in Barrie, Ontario; my first career was design and drafting in Orillia, Ont, Vancouver and Toronto. I would be interested in seeing photos of events/people from the late sixties and early seventies.

It is great to see the pictures of the reunion last month, and see some of the faces of those who attended. Beck is real special to me, as we had the best training in education from loving, caring teachers. From the time I started in 1943 with Mr. Max Magee as my home room teacher (he had the music for the 1943-44 year, until the time I graduated in 1948 with Principal, Mr. Cliff. Johnson, the standards were high, and I do not remember any student having to be let go for reasons other than they failed to make the grade. I would have loved to have been there, only age-related problems kept me the 800 miles to the south of London where I have lived since 1969 and am now retired. Thank you for this web site. Strange isn't it, that Sir Adam Beck has not been home to students in twenty years and yet, in spite of all the physical changes to the school, its spirit doesn't die. Well, I can't begin to tell the committee what an amazing job they did. You should be very proud of a job well done. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire week-end of getting to talk to former classmates, teachers and touring the hallowed halls. The photo display was amazing and I got goose bumps sitting in yes, sorry Jim Cash both singing auditoriums and singing along with other Spartans. We still can belt out a tune or two and wasn't it astounding that we remembered the Beck cheer despite the aging process. Yes, I did let my little sister walk down the halls with me and spoke to her. Actually we had our own reunion as well as she flew in from New Hampshire. She had her tickets bought early as she wasn't about to miss this. She sent her school sweater by mail to be included in the front of the school. Although it had yellowed slightly and the crests were sewn on crookedly she was so proud to see it hanging high. 13 were at our table for the supper and were impressed with the entire evening. We were one of the last groups to say farewell. Jacky Grundy Blackwell, I enjoyed our evening together catching up on new events and laughing over old times. We'll stay in touch I'm sure. Got to visit with a former neighbour Jan Cash who I haven't seen in 50 years. My husband was a grad of Wheable but on Sunday following the banquet he said the also had an amazing time. He particularly enjoyed the entertainment. It was very moving to see and hear Larry's son, Andrew perform. My sister and I put the CD on as soon as we got home on Saturday. It will be played often I am certain and bring back those great times at Beck as a Spartan. Congratulations to all those involved! I know I will be there for the next one. Go Spartans!

Jeez, I'm sorry I couldn't be there, but looking at all of the pics and displays here was still lots of fun. I'm impressed with the amazing amount of time and effort that went into the project- no doubt a labour of love for many. So thanks. I guess for me sports was a highlight (Spartan Football 1956-58) but there were so many others- the singing auditoriums on Friday which sound goofy today but were were such great fun, even if Donny Leach couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. What a WONDERFUL reunion! Thank you Co-chairs Jim Cash and Bonnie Lynne Wright, core planning group, and large volunteer group for all the meetings you attended, names you tracked, contacts you made, contingencies you thought of, amenities your organized, packages you assembled, decorations you put up and took down, details you handled... it was a fabulous reunion!

Everything seemed to run so smoothly – fun to be in the gym looking at all the memorabilia – beautifully organized – refreshments available, places to sit, slide show with the infamous voices, incredible nostalgia in the singing auditoriums, the glee club - photos, dinner and evening entertainment- humorous keynote, the Beckaneers, the Towne Criers - wonderful-so many memories flooding back in the music - green and white festive decorations, dance music- Glee club at church service. This weekend was a gift – Thank you for creating this opportunity for us to experience flashbacks to the past – and updates to the present. Time to remember those who nurtured our sense of ourselves as good people – those who sang with us songs of strength and faith and fun! Time to remember our innocence, our energy, our alliances, our challenges and successes, our vulnerabilities and moments we might do differently now. Time to thank people who had no idea what wonderful, strong role models they were to us as we moved from Grade nine or ten to become seniors ourselves. Time to hear about so many who have spent their lives since Beck teaching – public school, high school, university, adult learners – work that encouraged and educated, inspired and shaped lives as the teachers this event honored shaped our lives. Time to hear about those who have been in and/or running businesses, those involved in research, politicians, activists, physicians... - so many contributors to our communities. Thank you for all of this!

Oh Boy, Did we have fun!!! Hats off to all members of the Organizing Committee; you put heart and soul into every detail. To those of you who missed it: how unfortunate!! From Thursday evening's Glee Club rehearsal to Sunday afternoon's Church Service and social, everything was made for enjoyment. The memorabilia displays in the halls and gym, the slide show, singing auditoriums, and especially the "mingling times" were all wonderful. The "mingling", the meal, the entertainment program, and the dance at the Hellenic Centre made for a fantastic evening. It was a great experience to see so many happy, familiar faces. The only problem was too little time in one short weekend to really "catch up" with everybody you recognized.

I am devastated!!!! I picked up my five rolls of film from the Beck Reunion and almost broke down and cried in the store because I only got 3 poor photos back instead of 120! The camera broke!!!!!!!!!!! It flashed, it advanced, I smiled and thought what wonderful memories I am capturing. However, the lens did not open apparently. I thought that I had captured almost every 1960 grad there plus lots of other people and things. I am heartbroken. Just want to add my thanks to the Organizing Committee for putting together a very special weekend. I'm so glad to have attended ~ it would have been such a shame to have missed the chance to mull through that marvelous collection of photographs, newspaper articles and those incredible scrapbooks, to participate in just one more of Beck's singing auditoriums, and to reconnect at the Hellenic Centre with so many faces and voices from the past. Hi all, Greetings from beautiful (wet) Victoria, B. C. It was a thrill for me to be reunited with the rest of the Towne Criers (Tim, Ken and Ian) and to sing the old songs for you last Saturday night. I met Andrew Walsh (Larry's son) for the first time about 1:30 PM that afternoon prior to our first full rehearsal. Talk about a chip off the old block...and what a voice. It brought tears to my eyes as well. I'm sorry the rest of the group wasn't at the Sunday Church service and the reception which followed but I will pass on to them privately the many warm comments which were received by me with regards to our performance the previous evening.

After the reception I lingered too long in Victoria Park with another grad and subsequently missed my flight from Toronto to Victoria by seventeen minutes:-( Although it cost me a hotel room in Toronto overnight, I consider it a small price, as I was able to get to know (in small measure) someone I wish I had known better 40 years ago.

What a reunion! One of my favourite moments occurred on Saturday afternoon. The school song was played as the finale to Paul Cropp's and Bruce Nolan's wonderful slide show. Everyone in the auditorium automatically stood with no prompting and with no one leading us. We sang our hearts out while a spotlight shone on the Beck crest above the empty stage. I shall always remember the "goosebumps" I experienced at that moment.

My accolades go to the co-chairs and core/prime members of our committee who spent countless hours making this reunion the success it was. Special thanks to our website man, Fred Symons, who was working for us several hundred miles away from London. Barbara Husser Dalrymple

This thank you is for all of the folks who worked long hours to make a memorable weekend come together. The picture boards brought back so many happy memories, and since my own pictures were destroyed in an accident, I especially enjoyed the review.

While I enjoyed singing the old songs, it was the glee club singing that brought out the goose bumps. And the pleasure and pride I always felt in being part of that group hasn't dimmed one iota. The harmony thrilled me and the standing ovation showed that everyone else felt the same.

Personalities have remarkably remained the same. The folks that twinkled back then still do. I felt a gentleness and appreciation in the atmosphere that touched my heart and warmed my soul.

Thanks to all the organizers of this past weekend. While sitting in the auditorium, singing all those "old" songs, you wonder where all those years have gone. You felt like a teenager again. The school spirit is definitely still there as was noticed in the singing of the School Song and Beck cheer! The display in the gymnasium was fantastic and thanks to everyone who brought these pictures and clippings . The Beck reunion was amazing and we enjoyed every aspect of it. The committee really did an excellent job and for such a cheap price (monetarily that is). I’m sure they paid the price in sweat, hours and personal costs. I can’t remember when I have had such a good, easy and fun time. Pass on our congratulations to others who worked so hard.

To the organizing committee, thank you so very much for an absolutely great weekend! I felt like I was 17 again! The years seemed to melt away as I saw so many familiar names and faces and then listened to the Town Criers who were amazing -it was 1963 again! Today I felt a sadness that the reunion was over, and I really hadn't had time to talk very long to anyone (and some people I didn't see at all!) I would like to add my thanks and congratulations to our planning committee for a job well done on our reunion. I moved from Alberta in Aug. 1962 and by some luck or chance, became a student at Sir Adam Beck. Knowing no one, at an age when many of my fellow "Spartans" had friendships formed from years spent together in public school, I nevertheless found a home in the special place that was Sir Adam Beck. Like many others, the singing auditoriums are one of my happiest memories. Being a member of the Glee Club then, and being able to be a part of it again this weekend, was a special treat. As a couple of fellow "Spartans" whom I spoke to this weekend said, if you were not a part of the Beck experience, it is difficult to explain it to others. If you told others you were making a special effort to attend a reunion at a school closed so long ago, they could not possibly understand the special connection you have with Beck which draws you back. I believe that the music was one of the strongest components which made and continues to make, Spartan spirit. My husband, who did not have the privilege of attending Beck, felt that elusive something as we took part in this weekends activities. Thanks again to the organizing committee for making it possible once again to be a part of the Beck family doing what they have always done best - sing their hearts out, and in 4 part harmony!!!! Thank you all for a wonderful weekend. While driving home to St. Catherine's today I laughed and smiled to myself at all the things that happened. Words are inadequate to express the heartfelt thanks of all of us to the organizing committee. Hearing the Town Criers and in particular the contribution of Larry Walsh's son, Andrew was the highlight of a tremendous weekend. During the singing auditorium I recognized that in trying to live a productive life and make a contribution to the greater good of society as a Social Worker over many years of practice, my grounding could be found in the words of the song No Man is an Island. Beck truly was a unique and wonderful high school. It was great seeing so many friends and having memories flood back. Again thanks to all those who made this possible.

I had a wonderful time. It was a bit like going back in time, with so many of my teen-age school friends all in one place. It was really great seeing and talking with all of you again. It sure brought back many, many great memories, and brought to mind the positive impact those years had on me.

What a fabulous week end! Thank you for all your effort and hard work. We had a wonderful time at the old school, meeting old friends, eating in the cafeteria, and looking at the displays. Looking back over the years gone by at the year book in 1966 the hottest looking woman was Christine Fradgley. I sincerely hope she continues to look great. The idea of a reunion was a good one but the format of the Last Hurrah couldn't be beat. Seeing old friends and meeting new people from more recent years was something I will remember. How did we ever lose to Lucas in that football season and why did I never get to meet Christine, these questions I will take to the grave. P. Leinweber.

Yes, I married my high school sweetheart, Rick and on April 30, 2005 we will be married 39 years. I went on to Teacher's College but never went further. Greetings from a Beck Reunion wannabe! I had the privilege of attending Beck during my first two years of high school from Sept'59 to June '61. My family then moved to Edmonton and I gradually lost touch with some very good friends. Hope the guestbook will help me reconnect wih them and catch up on the last 43 years! My maiden name was Sandy Harris, I lived on Queens Avenue and attended Lorne Avenue Public School. Of all my 58 birthdays, my 15th was the worst. I agree that when running through the list of registrants one would love to be there. Unfortunately I am unable to attend but my thoughts and memories will certainly be there. The past year I have been in touch with Doug Petch and Merv Burgard and had lunch with Carolyn Wilson (I'm using the "beck" names!) I've lived in B.C. for over 40 years and love it but often pine for London. Over 30 years ago I ran in to Marg Dow here on the north shore but have lost track of her...saw her name on the list. Other names that caught my attention were Marg Batchelor, Florence Darnell, Marg Scandrett, John Orr and Ken Johnston & Ann Vanstone and many others. My brother Bob went to Beck with Bob Nicholson and his Mom and mine were close friends. My fondest memories of Beck were the music programs with Carl Chapman...I was part of the "Beckettes" and shared the role of Katisha in the Mikado. I was rehearsal pianist for some of the G & S shows. Some of you might remember the group of folk singers from the early 60's;Larry Walsh, Tim Rowat, Brad Myers, Ken Wilson and Iain Crichton. Ken and I were talking on Wednesday of this week. We haven't seen a lot of each other over the last 40 years. We discovered something in common, something very strange. One of my kids is a performer. He's done Beauty and The Beast in Toronto and New York. One of Ken's kids is a performer. She's done Les Miz in New York and on tour. Guess What? My kid did the Les Miz tour for three years! Ken went to Ottawa to see the show. Gee, I went to Ottawa to see the show. I wonder... Unbelievable, Ken's kid Jessica and my kid, Graham, were on tour together. They are both working in New York. I have finally found my box of high-school memorabilia and can promise you 3 partial years of Spartan newspapers, a 13A class photo and the 1964 graduate one that's already on the web, a couple of messy, never-glued scrapbooks (which will make the clippings easier to scan) of bits of the Free Press showing sports, student gov't, drama club and school show, including Beck on Call, and, ta-da, the 2 page spread with all the names and marks of Grade 13 exam writers in London in 1964. (I can tell you a copy of that was a big hit at Central last year, as the boomers got out their reading glasses and people chortled at their friends' and spouses' marks.) And wedding announcements. I have been working on the reunion committee and look forward to seeing former classmates and team mates. My committee compatriot for the 65 to 69 group, Barb Gavin, suggested I use this space as a forum to make an apology. In January 1978 I was in a hamburger joint at Hale and Dundas when a young couple pleasantly acknowledged that they remembered me from Beck. Their warmth was met with a rude reply from me. Their feeling of rejection was obvious and resulted in a correspondingly unpleasant comment. I had just come from Victoria Hospital. My mother had a brain aneurysm on Boxing Day of 1977 and was in critical condition. I wasn't living in London, but took a nostalgic trip out Dundas east where I grew up. I don't know who you are or if you will see this. If you do, however, please accept my sincere apology for being extremely rude to you. There is absolutely no justification for my bad behaviour despite what I was dealing with. I have anguished over this incident since it happened and deeply regret it.

Hello all, I am impressed with all the work that has gone into planning this reunion. I regret that I can only attend for part of the weekend but will look forward to seeing my classmates of the '66 graduating year on Friday night and perhaps again on Sunday. I now live in Dundas, Ont. I am currently a learning resource teacher with the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and plan to retire at the end of this school year. From my Beck days, I remember the opening of the new addition when I first came, my home room in the basement, the ceremony for the raising of the new Canadian flag with the school assembled around the flagpole, the Glee Club, writing a letter to the Governor General in my best handwriting to ask if the Glee Club could sing for him on our trip to Ottawa (We sang for Madame Vanier), Mr. Fagan bowing and shaking Madame Vanier's hand and a loud electrical shock resounding out across the ballroom of Government House, Mr. Doole coming into Physics class and telling us that John Kennedy had just been shot, some guys sitting at the back of chemistry class roasting marshmallows on the bunsen burners on the last day of class, the Current Affairs Club trips to New York and Washington....and yes, the most memorable of all....the singing auditoriums. I have enjoyed a great career as a librarian in various academic and government libraries and I am now Head of the Bronfman Business Library at the Schulich School of Business at York University. Having lived in a family of Beck attendees what with Mother and sister attending ahead of me ... in fact I was a "niner" while my sister was doing her last year at Beck ... you know ignoring me in the halls when she was hanging out with her friends ... I am so excited to be returning to the school of great memories and anxious to be reacquainted with old friends and hallowed spaces. I now live in the U.S.A., at the New England seaside but only a flight away from my home... you can take the girl out of Canada but you cannot take the Canadian out of the girl! I am soooo looking forward to this opportunity and want to thank those that have made this event possible. I was fortunate to attend my public school reunion a couple of years ago and see some of you there. Here's to Prince Charles Public School grads too! Go purple, green, and white. Hi Everyone associated with Beck Collegiate! I want to thank the committees for their diligent efforts in arranging this great reunion. I am disappointed that I will not be able to attend as I will be out of the country. Thank you for the letter. The auditorium sing songs were the best! The teachers superb! Just a little note of humour - when we were about to move back to London in 1973, I said to my children, "Now ÿou will be able to go to my high school!" It was a unanimous response, "It has probably fallen down by now." I attended from 1947 to 1951. Beck Spartan's Hail!!! I was wondering if you have had anyone from the last couple of years the school was open advise they were attending your function? I attended from 1980-82 when I had to go to Central. (against my will) Even though I only went to Beck for two years I often think back on those days with great fondness. I loved going to that school. I played football and basketball for both years. There was just something about that little school that has stuck with me my entire life. I have two requests. Please correct the spelling of my name on the class pictures. My last name was Aldridge not Aldrich. I was in the class of 1950. Does anyone have information on my cousins, Ted and Eleanor Collins. Ted was in the class of '51 and Eleanor was in the class of '53 or '54. Memories - renewing old memories with new ones! I loved most of my teachers back them - and have better memories of each of them as I grew up. I loved Geography, English, Writing, Art and Music. Played the piano for 100 choir singers when I was in grade 10. Now I continue to remember and play in nursing homes. Art took me on to Beal Tech and I got teacher's first 100! I did miss Sir Adam Beck. Hubby and I both worked but now 27 years our own p&p business has kept us busy and traveling far. Settled on Vancouver Island to enjoy when we can. Wow - over 50 years. I look forward with excitement to seeing my old classmates. I know that I haven't aged (much). I hope that my classmates and teachers haven't as well. The wonderful memories of those innocent? fun-loving, happy, pleasant years will remain with me for a lifetime. Basketball and football games followed by sock hops in the gym were the best. In May, my wife and I were in Sacramento, CA. and spent several days with my old buddy David Springett recalling those wonderful days. Following is a "Morning Announcement" about the upcoming "Beck On Call" reunion.

At our committee meeting last night it was identified that some people from other eras (especially the 40's) want to attend but feel they are not welcome.

Our committee wants to correct that impression. They are welcome to join in - as are any Beck alumni who wish to attend regardless of when they attended Beck.

While the Reunion Program is generally aimed at the 50/60 eras (Song selections, memorabilia displays, etc.) there will be many opportunities for others to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

While we do not have the capability of doing the extensive research to locate all those of the other eras, we do welcome any who contact us and wish to attend.

You can get a copy of the “Reunion Brochure” and “Registration Form” from this web site (see menu item on home page). If you know of other Alumni who are not aware then please input their information on the “Roll Call” page and we will then contact them (by phone or mail as appropriate)

Hope to see you at the Reunion - it is coming up fast so get your registrations in.

Hi Beck First: Hello "Mr. Gladwell"; I was one of your students, and later became--briefly--a teacher. My daughter is now a high school teacher in the same school she attended, and it seems to be commonplace. I am looking forward to this event: last fall I attended the Central 125th with my husband, and found lots of old friends there, so Beck should be even better! Hello. I'm not a reunion-type guy but this one has all the makings of a very special event thanks to a handful of very dedicated people. Someone at this site referred to the grads as "mellowing"? I wonder what that makes Marsh Morris? With so many of my former teachers (who subsequently became my colleagues for four years) having passed on, I'm really looking forward to seeing MM. Like so many of that era he was a class act. I can't actually say those Beck years were the best of my life (my wife, the former teacher and librarian, Miss Waite would not approve), but they were very memorable for all the right reasons.

Back from the ??? Thanks to the "nagging" of Bonnie over the past 30-45 years I finally paid attention to what's going on with Beck Collegiate. Bonnie and I were classmates back when and she has contacted me every 5-10 years to check on me. Love her. High school at Beck more than prepared me for university in the states and without doubt, a successful life. This is just a short intro to say I'm still alive, made it through the Nam (despite rumors) and have managed to stay on the good side of the law. To all my classmates, it was a magnificent adventure with lessons that have assured me an appreciation of life, happiness and well being. Woody (Larry) Woodhouse

Hi Everyone: It's great being able to read what wonderful memories others have from our high school years. I know how hard the reunion committee is working at putting this together, and all of us should be proud of them for taking on such a huge endeavor---let's support them and make this a weekend to remember. As I have been viewing the old photographs I realize how fortunate I was to have begun my teaching career at Beck. The staff was experienced and dedicated and the students were co operative and friendly. This Beck experience influenced my career in education and affected my administrative responsibilities as principal of two large secondary schools in North York -- Emery Collegiate and Georges Vanier Secondary School. My name is Don Lymburner and I attended Grades 11 and 12 from 1953 until June of 1955 when, unfortunately, my family moved to Winnipeg and I followed in August after a summer at Crumlin airport with the Air Force Auxiliary. I was active with the cadet corps and a member of the Key Club. Aside from the great teachers, Mr. Chapman for math and Mr. Langford for English (Who can forget his text "Grass of Parnassus") I remember best the auditorium sing alongs. A couple of my closest friends were Ron McClatchie and Alex Middleton. I look forward to seeing them and others to renew old acquaintances and reminisce about the good times. Life at Beck Collegiate is one of my fondest memories. Traveling each morning on the Hamilton Road bus with friends and neighbours is still vivid in my list of fun times . Here in Nova Scotia It's great to go on the Classmates Web site and see the names of people I remember from Beck. Hope some of them will be at the Reunion so even if we don't recognize one another name tags will go along way to bring back the old days. I like to tell my children that I attended school when you actually received an education. I hope that some others from my years spent at that wonderful old place will be there. It's nice to see so many "Beckites" have fond memories. I attended in 1945 to '49 and still remember some of my old classmates and teachers. Having been blessed with good health, I will be attending even though I am 72 years of age. A lot of water has gone under my bridge but I still remember the old school and the wonderfully huge campus. I hope some of my classmates will be there. Looking forward to see the old school. When I hear others speak of their years in High School, it is not with fond remembrance. As a graduate of Beck in the year 1963, I have only the very best memories of the school, the staff, my classmates and the wonderful activities that we had the privilege to enjoy. I don't know what things are like in Canada at this time. I have lived in the Atlanta, Georgia area for almost 20 years now. Here there are metal detectors and police officers in the schools. Weekly, you hear of a student being expelled for carrying a weapon to school or for making threats against the staff and students. We had it made and I think that most of us knew it. As much as I would love to see all of you, I cannot make it to the reunion. Please know that I am missing all the friends who made those years some of the best of my life. We have been blessed to have been a part of this wonderful old school - Sir Adam Beck. This 'family' of people refuse to let the spirit that was generated many years ago die, even though the building itself is no longer a school. Singing Auditoriums still take place periodically, reunions are planned and old friends meet. This October 1,2,3 of 2004 is a reunion for those attending from 1950-69 and it might very well be the last 'big' reunion to take place. I hate to admit it, but maybe we are getting too old to organize another one of this size. That is not to say that the "rah, rah, rah" has fizzled - we have just 'mellowed' a little bit. I do hope to see all my old friends this fall. However, there are still lots of 'Lost Spartans'. Please review this list found on this website and see if you can make this list shrink. Thanks to everyone who has helped with the reunion and for making it a priority in their lives for a long time. It has not been an easy task but the rewards will be worth the efforts.
